Teller Simulation Helps Credit Union Hire the Best Candidates
Numerica Credit Union got its start in the midst of the Depression – following the incredible expansion of the railroad into the Northwestern Region of the country, a bond was formed between railroad workers who wanted to help each other financially by pooling their modest resources: one man’s savings was rewarded with the interest paid on a loan given to another.
Years later, as the economy changed, Spokane Railway Credit Union (SRCU) adapted by including the employers of other transportation systems and shippers. The membership grew and prospered, and in 2000, SRCU greeted the new millennium by again opening its doors to help even more inlanders in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. Consideration of a name change was a serious issue for Spokane Railway’s Board, certainly because of the railroad heritage of both the credit union and the Spokane area itself, but also because of the fine reputation developed by the institution over the years.
The name is now Numerica Credit Union, but the principle is the same.
Now, over 90,000 individuals form a bond to help each other financially by pooling their resources — offering rewards to those who deposit their savings and opportunities for loans to those in need.
According to Jennifer Little, Numerica needed a way to test teller applicants for skills that are necessary for our positions, “We received many resumes that stated a variety of experiences in cash handling and customer service. It was time consuming to judge the candidates based on the variety of experiences and then to narrow down the sample fairly and accurately. We needed a better sample of people who could prove these expectations.”
Assessment Strategy & Key Differentiators
DeGarmo recommended a simulation
assessment to measure person-job fit and screen core work skills.
“The simulation we chose to use helped streamline our interview process as well as saved valuable time for our management team. We can now focus on finding those team members who are an excellent fit for Numerica’s culture, knowing that they already have the skillset necessary to perform the basic functions of their job,” noted Little in discussing how the solution has helped increase efficiency, consistency, and objectivity of Numerica’s assessment process.
“DeGarmo’s representative reached out to me to offer a one-on-one meeting to go through the simulation and allowed me to ask questions. This meeting provided me with the assurances I needed,” said Little.
Numerica has experienced great success with the DeGarmo platform. According to Little, “The simulation put candidates through real situations that can occur in our branches. We are able to see the various experiences of the candidates put into action, and how those experiences actually affected the applicant’s performance. This also benefitted the applicant by providing a first look into what the candidate can expect in the position they are applying for.”
“The simulation has helped us hire and retain quality employees that deliver excellent member service every day.”
“The teller simulation my organization uses is helpful and time saving. Most importantly, it has helped us find some wonderful and qualified team members who we know will provide our members with the quality service that they have come to expect from Numerica. Any time we need technical help, the service representatives we have spoken to have been very helpful and very easy to work with.”
Little explained that, “We really don’t have a lot of challenges, and here’s why. Numerica has a strong culture that has defined our brand from the inside, out. We are committed to fostering well-being in the lives of our members. Part of honoring that promise, is to make managing finances as easy as possible for our members. Therefore, we place great importance on innovation and technology.”
“We place great importance on innovation and technology… the HR department benefits from the most up-to-date technology. We are lucky to be a part of an organization that makes the challenges of hiring new employees as minimal as possible! And, being able to take advantage of the DeGarmo’s simulation is a great example.”
