Teller Simulation Helps Credit Union Hire the Best Candidates
Numerica Credit Union got its start in the midst of the Depression – following the incredible expansion of the railroad into the Northwestern Region of the country, a bond was formed between railroad workers who wanted to help each other financially by pooling their modest resources: one man’s savings was rewarded with the interest paid on a loan given to another.
Years later, as the economy changed, Spokane Railway Credit Union (SRCU) adapted by including the employers of other transportation systems and shippers. The membership grew and prospered, and in 2000, SRCU greeted the new millennium by again opening its doors to help even more inlanders in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. Consideration of a name change was a serious issue for Spokane Railway’s Board, certainly because of the railroad heritage of both the credit union and the Spokane area itself, but also because of the fine reputation developed by the institution over the years.
The name is now Numerica Credit Union, but the principle is the same.
Now, over 90,000 individuals form a bond to help each other financially by pooling their resources — offering rewards to those who deposit their savings and opportunities for loans to those in need.
According to Jennifer Little, Numerica needed a way to test teller applicants for skills that are necessary for our positions, “We received many resumes that stated a variety of experiences in cash handling and customer service. It was time consuming to judge the candidates based on the variety of experiences and then to narrow down the sample fairly and accurately. We needed a better sample of people who could prove these expectations.”
